There might be a 4-inch iPhone 7 in your future after all

Apple is reportedly making two or three new iPhones this year, depending on what the latest rumor says. Some sources claim Apple has a new 4-inch iPhone 6c model in the works, in addition to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus for this year. The smaller model rumored to offer Apple’s latest technologies – including Touch ID support, A8 chip or later, NFC and Apple Pay support – to those buyers looking for a smaller iPhone. On the other hand, one analyst who has usually been accurate about Apple’s unannounced products claimed recently that only new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones will be released this year.

So now, of course, it’s time for rumors of a 4-inch iPhone to resurface.

A new report from Digitimes, citing TechNews, again suggests a new 4-inch “iPhone 7″ is in the works. The publication says that AUO is on the verge of signing an agreement with Apple to supply iPhone screens of various sizes, including 4-inch, 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch LTPS in-cell displays.

Apple is apparently “looking for additional panel suppliers both for current and upcoming iPhones in order to secure shipments, as other makers’ yields have been fluctuating,” supply chain sources have said.

The publication also mentions that Apple Daily and UDN say AUO’s role in Apple’s supply chain isn’t likely to begin until the launch of 2016 iPhones, which could be known as the iPhone 7 family.

Thus, even if Apple might not release a new iPhone 6c this year, choosing instead to keep the “old” iPhone 5s in its lineup for one more year, the company is apparently not going to ditch the 4-inch iPhone form factor in the future – that’s assuming these reports from Taiwan about AUO’s involvement in future iPhone screen production are accurate.
