Kodak Smartphones will hit stores next next year, and their first product will be unveiled in January at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES).

It shouldn’t be a surprise that the brand most famous for their photography devices plans to use their smartphone to make it a lot simpler to share and even print pictures.

According to PR Newswire, the company is focusing on design and user experience, which will help the product “stand out in a market segment that is currently under-served.”

Building the hardware and actually licensing the Kodak brand is Bullitt Group, who is known for creating smartphones for the large construction company, Caterpillar. That means that Kodak is technically not creating a mobile device all on their own.

Bullitt Mobile CEO, Oliver Schulte, says that Kodak smartphones will not compromise other features for simplicity – something common in the smartphone market. “These devices will address a segment of the mobile device market that has been poorly served to date.”

Schulte goes on to say they are “giving customers easy access to printing and sharing services while still offering the latest Android OS and features found on high-end smartphones.” Because of this, both Bullitt and Kodak believe their product will attract a huge number of users who look for ease of use and a sleek design while also keeping value functionality.

Their first smartphone isn’t the only thing the company is showing off at the international CES. Also unveiled will be a “4G handset, a tablet, and a connected camera.”

The smartphone market is a booming one that will most likely never end. Kodak isn’t the first company to jump on the bandwagon. Panasonic experimented with a smartphone called the Lumix CM1. Because it’s not been on sale for too long, it’s difficult to measure its success today.

Even Amazon jumped in with their Fire Phone, but it was a major flop that led to a huge surplus just sitting in warehouses. Still, the online giant sees how important the market is, and it seems like they’re not giving up.

Kodak definitely has the brand name that has long been trusted by consumers, as Schulte said. And with their software making it a lot easier to take, edit, share, store, and print pictures in an instant, it could be a huge success.

But then again, the product could completely flop. While the company says that the Kodak smartphones will focus on the market segment poorly served, not compromising other components, Schulte says that they aren’t focusing too much on quality hardware as much as they are the ease-of-use solutions. If that means poor quality in hardware, then smartphone users may turn their back on it.

But if it’s good enough while also making the software a lot easier to use, consumers may charge for it.

The Kodak smartphones along with the tablet, connected camera, and 4G handset is set to go on sale in the second half of 2015.

Do you think it’s a good idea for Kodak to join the money-making smartphone market?
