Ikea has designed a ‘Kitchen of the Future’ and it looks absolutely amazing

For the past couple of years, Ikea has been working on the Concept Kitchen 2025 project in which it has tried to incorporate new technology to redefine how we use our kitchens. The project is done particularly with an eye toward making our kitchens more eco-friendly while encouraging us to not waste food.

One concept that Ikea has unveiled that’s particularly cool involves rigging a camera and a projector above a table that can see what ingredients you’re using and then can project recipe ideas right onto the table depending on what you’re using. The projector can also deliver nutritional information about the ingredients you’re using so you’ll know whether you’ve created a balanced meal.

Here’s something even crazier: Ikea doesn’t think we’ll have refrigerators in the future. Instead, it imagines we’ll have drones that deliver our ingredients to us fresh on a pay-as-you-go basis. There will be small inductive cooling containers in the Ikea kitchen where you will be able to keep ingredients such as meats chilled until you’re ready to use them, however. That said, Ikea wants to keep our cooling storage to a minimum so we’ll actually use the ingredients we buy instead of throwing them away.

Finally, the kitchen imagines an in-house composting system in which all of your recyclables are ground down into tiny “pucks” that will be picked up by your city’s trash collectors.

“Organic waste washed from the sink into the composting system is blended, the water extracted, and it’s then compressed into a dry, odorless puck,” Ikea writes of its composting system. “These pucks can be stacked for pickup by the municipality.”
