Google Store to Sell Chromebooks, Nexus Phones and More

Google's hardware is getting an online retail space all to itself. Launching today (March 11), the Google Store will offer everything from Chromebooks to Android phones and tablets.

MORE: Best Smartphones

Those devices had been available through the Devices section of the Google Play store. But a company spokesperson said that the number of devices that Google makes has reached a point that justifies a separate store. Google Play's devices tab now redirects to the Google Store.

By splitting its hardware retail efforts from its apps, Google is taking a page out of Apple's book, which has long had separate online outlets for selling its devices and Mac and iOS apps. And Google certainly can boast enough hardware to fill its virtual shelves. Among the items on sale at the Google Store are the Nexus 6 smartphone, Nexus 9 tablet, Android Wear smartwatches, the Nexus Player streaming box, the Chromecast streaming dongle and Nest's smart thermostat. The Google Store's launch coincides with the release of an updated Chromebook Pixel, which the newly launched online store displays prominently.

In addition to hardware, you'll also find accessories on sale at the Google Store. And Google is trying its hand at salesmanship of another kind with a section that touts the merits of its Android operating system.

If you are in the market for any of the hardware on sale at the Google Store, this may be the time to make that purchase: Google's offering free shipping on everything to mark the store's launch. You'll also find USB-C adapters available here that are cheaper than those you'll find on Apple's site.
