Britney Spears App Keeps up with the Kardashians

Click me baby, one more time: Britney Spears has signed on with the publishing house that helped Kim Kardashian become that addictive force in mobile gaming that you can't put down. Glu Mobile has signed a five-year deal with a three-year extension possibility to create a (hopefully) free-to-play app revolving around the performer.

It turns out the modern celebrity brand is no longer complete with just a clothing line, a live show in Las Vegas and a litany of perfume scents. Now you need your own smartphone game to be a true player in the landscape. Sure, Britney isn’t the head-shaving, headline-grabbing center of the pop world that she used to be, Spears is still releasing music regularly. Her last record was 2013’s Britney Jean, and she went into the studio last year to begin work on an upcoming ninth album.

The publisher expects to launch the game in the first half of 2016, and has stated that it will feature Britney’s voice, likeness and “creative influence.” Even with all of that high-quality development input, the game isn’t likely to reinvent the wheel. Glu has only hinted at the game allowing players to interact with the digitized version of Spears and “experience the glitz and glamour of the entertainment business.”

Glu Mobile is the publisher behind the phenomenally successful Kim Kardashian: Hollywood game (as well as mobile ports of the Deer Hunter game franchise, and game adaptations of the recent RoboCop and Hercules films). Forecasting a possible eight years of gaming with Britney may be optimistic, but after Kim’s game made $1.6 million in it’s first five days on the market, Glu is betting that an even more established pop icon is worth their investment. Kim Kardashian: Hollywood is available on iOS, Android, Facebook and the Amazon app store, so, we imagine, will Brittany's app be.

Glu also has deals with pop stars like Katy Perry and Kylie and Kendall Jenner. The company's baseball title Tap Sports Baseball 2015 features the likenesses of the diamond’s greats -- including David Ortiz -- thanks to a licensing deal with the MLB Players Union. A release date and official price for the Brittany Spears app has not yet been announced.
