After a brief lull, the PS4 is back to trampling on the Xbox One and Nintendo 3DS

After being edged out by the Xbox One in December and falling behind the Nintendo 3DS in February, the PlayStation 4 reclaimed its spot at the top of the hardware sales chart in March, the NPD Group revealed in its latest report.

“We are truly honored PlayStation 4 is the top-selling console and No. 1 in software sales again according to NPD sales data for March 2015,” said a spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment.

Official sales figures were not released, but at the last count, Sony had sold over 20.2 million PS4s worldwide since the console’s debut.

Microsoft also released its own statement as well, claiming that “cumulative U.S. Xbox One sales continued to outpace Xbox 360 sales at the same point in its lifecycle.” The company is looking forward to competing for the top spot once again over the holiday season after Halo 5: Guardians launches on October 27th.

Even Nintendo had a positive spin for March, noting that “overall sales of Nintendo hardware systems so far in 2015 have increased by nearly 60 percent over sales during the same time frame in 2014.” That significant boost can be attributed heavily to the release of the New Nintendo 3DS XL, but Wii U sales are up 20% on their own as well.

Overall, it was a bit of a down month for the industry, but as Sony and Microsoft duke it out for the lowest price point, the numbers are going to continue to shift drastically throughout the year.
