Robotic mowers dealer demonstrates capabilities in Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – A Johnson City man wants to spread the word about the capabilities of robotic lawnmowers.

David Dubin of RoboScape Robot Mowers sells Husqvarna models and also services and installs units in the area. Husqvarna makes a wide range of robotic mowers, but since there are no dealerships in the region, Dubin acts as a local hub for robotic mowers.

“It’s very convenient. It actually is more cost-effective than buying a brand new mower, pretty much, and there’s other advantages as well. It’s quiet,” Dubin said. “It’s economically effective when it comes to the gas and the maintenance. And then the other big thing is it’s ecologically friendly. It doesn’t put out any fumes or anything like that.”

Cost-wise, Dubin said the robotic mowers start at $600. Those models can cut up to about 0.4 acres, and Dubin said they rarely encounter issues. Other models can become more expensive but cover a wider range.

The mowers can be set up using one of two methods to determine where they will cut the grass.

“It’s just like a dog fence or an electric dog fence,” Dubin said of the first option. “You simply just like that one. You just lay the wire around the perimeter, and it terminates at the charging station on two ends, and then the mower just simply stays within the boundary wire.”

The second option uses GPS. Dubin told News Channel 11 that the satellites the mowers use have been in operation for some time and keep improving.

“With that, you just create the boundary with the mower itself. You don’t use wire, and then the satellites record that boundary, and it keeps it in the memory of the mower.”

The quiet mowers can be controlled by phone or with systems like Alexa.

Dubin said the robotic mowers do recognize obstructions and will stop if an animal or child gets in their paths.

While they are unable to reach every nook and cranny, Dubin said the models can cut up to 98% of a yard. Dubin himself lives on a property with several inclines and hills, but he said the models with 4-wheel or all-wheel drive have no issue making it around.
