Get ready to stream local music on the new SML Logjam

Have you heard the news? Shreve Memorial Library is launching its very own, online music streaming service this summer. The new platform called the SML Logjam will feature a collection of Shreveport and Caddo Parish music unlike any other. With the SML Logjam, you will be able to stream music from local artists and musicians representing the diverse and varied genres of the Shreveport music scene. The new site is set to launch in August 2024.

Currently, the library is looking for artists, bands, and musicians to help build the online collection by submitting music to be considered for inclusion. If you, your band, or a musician you know would like to be a part of this awesome new music platform, submit your music samples online at smllogjam.org/submit now through August 1. All submissions should include 1 to 3 full-length tracks representative of the musician’s overall work. The library’s team of curators will evaluate all submissions based on a variety of criteria with the ultimate goal of building a music collection as eclectic as the sounds of Shreveport, Caddo Parish and northwest Louisiana. Those selected for inclusion in the SML Logjam will sign a 3-year licensing agreement with Shreve Memorial Library to have their work hosted on the site and will receive an honorarium for sharing their music in the collection.

Now, there are a few requirements for inclusion in the collection. 1) A majority of band members must be currently performing and/or based in the Shreveport/Caddo Parish area. 2) Albums must be complete and released within the past five years. 3) You must own or control all rights to the music submitted. And 4) you must be at least 15 years of age. If this sounds like something you are interested in, be sure to check out smllogjam.org for more details.

I am so excited about this new, free streaming service made possible by Shreve Memorial Library and Rabble. Rabble is a startup based in Madison, Wisconsin that works with libraries to build software that reflects and responds to the values, needs, and goals of the library community. The MUSICat software that powers SML Logjam is a fully open sourced platform designed by Rabble with libraries to empower them to share local music and support creative communities.

So this summer, join the jam – the SML Logjam that is – and dream, discover, do!

What’s New at the Library

Anna O: A Novel by Matthew Blake (fiction)

Anna O will wake up the world. What if your nightmares weren’t really nightmares at all? We spend an average of 33 years of our lives asleep. But what really happens, and what are we capable of, when we sleep? Anna Ogilvy was a budding twenty-five-year-old writer with a bright future. Then, one night, she stabbed two people to death with no apparent motive – and hasn’t woken up since. Dubbed “Sleeping Beauty” by the tabloids, Anna’s condition is a rare psychosomatic disorder known to neurologists as “resignation syndrome.” Dr. Benedict Prince is a forensic psychologist and an expert in the field of sleep-related homicides. His methods are the last hope of solving the infamous “Anna O” case and waking Anna up so she can stand trial. But he must be careful treating such a high-profile suspect – he’s got career secrets and a complicated personal life of his own. As Anna shows the first signs of stirring, Benedict must determine what really happened and whether Anna should be held responsible for her crimes. Only Anna knows the truth about that night, but only Benedict knows how to discover it. And they’re both in danger from what they find out.

The Gardins of Edin: A Novel by Rosey Lee (fiction)

The four women of the Gardin family live side-by-side in Edin, Georgia, but residing in tight proximity doesn’t mean everything is picture-perfect. Ruth runs the family’s multimillion-dollar peanut business, a legacy of the Gardins’ formerly enslaved ancestors. But tensions have intensified since the death of her husband, Beau, and she feels like an outsider in the very place she wishes to belong. Sisters Mary and Martha fuel the family tension. Martha’s unfounded mistrust of Ruth causes her to constantly seek ways to undermine Ruth’s decisions with the business, while Mary, trying to focus on her new restaurant that serves healthy comfort food, is dragged into the family fray by Martha. For years, Naomi, the matriarch who raised the sisters after their parents’ death and supported Ruth in her grief, has played peacemaker. But as she decides to take a step back, hidden truths, life-and-death circumstances, and escalating clashes finally force the Gardin women to grapple with what it means to be a family. A heartwarming Southern story of family and all its many complexities, The Gardins of Edin delivers a thoughtful portrayal of four women trying to hold on to their secrets. Women who just might – if they can only let go – find the peace they seek by holding on to one another.

Sanctuary of the Shadow by Aurora Ascher (fiction)

Some follow their identity. Others fall for it. For humans, Salizar’s is a place of mystery and wonder. For Harrow, it’s a place to hide from those who slaughtered her entire clan. But beneath the layers of rage and isolation, one glimpse into those inky black eyes reveals a soul that calls out to the loneliness in Harrow. And so she chooses him. She is drawn to the mystery of him, her unquenchable need for his kiss. And as powerful enemies align and conspire against them, Harrow knows their only hope is escape. Now, with every secret she unlocks from his past, a shadow from her own whispers free – luring enemies who will stop at nothing to get their final revenge on Harrow.
