Project will turn manure into energy at Lake Odessa dairy farm

LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (WOOD) — A proposed facility in Ionia County will recycle food waste and manure into energy.

Ag-Grid Energy LLC has teamed up with Meadowbrook Dairy, a farm located in Lake Odessa, for the project. The facility located on the farm will take in manure and local food waste and turn it into renewable natural gas and renewable electricity.

The project would recycle 20,000 gallons of food waste and 100,000 gallons of manure daily, according to Ag-Grid’s website. Meadowbrook has more than 2,000 milking cows at its farm.

According to a project memo from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the project would create 120,000 MMBTU of renewable natural gas and 4.8 million kilowatt hours of renewable electricity annually using anaerobic digesting equipment.

The Michigan Strategic Fund approved a request to issue $40 million in bonds to fund the project on Tuesday.

Project leaders expect the facility will start recycling food waste and manure in 2025.
