New Prime Video movies: the best films to stream in May

Release date: May 1
RT score: 97% (critics); 89% (audience)

A legendary comedy, this satirical and slapstick film, which spoofs air disaster movies, remains as funny to this day as it was when it was released in 1980. Airplane! stars Robert Hays as Ted Striker, an ex-fighter pilot with PTSD who's tasked with landing a commercial airliner when its crew is taken ill with food poisoning.

Some of its cultural references and gender-based stereotypes are outdated almost 45 years after it initially *ahem* landed in theaters, but Airplane! is a bona fide classic that'll make your jaw hurt from the amount of laughing you'll do. Come for the inflatable emergency autopilot sequences and stick around for the numerous deadpan "Good luck, we're all counting on you" quotes from the iconic Leslie Nielsen.

Schindler's List

Release date: May 1
RT score: 98% (critics); 97% (audience)

Over 30 years on from its initial theatrical launch, this Steven Spielberg-directed war drama is as heart-breaking, tear jerking, and emotionally resonant today as it was in 1993. Based on Thomas Keanally's Schindler's Ark novel, it tells the remarkable tale of Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), a German industrialist who saved more than 1,000 Jewish refugees from the Holocaust at the height of the second World War. Ralph Fiennes and Ben Kingsley also play prominent roles in its plot.

A harrowing and incredibly tender historical epic, Schindler's List was met with critical acclaim and multiple awards – including seven Oscars – in the months post-release. A cultural and historical powerhouse that deserves its place in the Library of Congress' most important movies of all-time list and an unmissable flick that needs to be added to your new Prime Video movies watchlist ASAP.

The Ring (2002)

Release date: May 1
RT score: 71% (critics); 48% (audience)

It's nowhere near as good as the 1998 Japanese original – simply titled Ring – but there's no denying that this US remake inspired other foreign language movies to be remade for English-speaking audiences.

In it, Naomi Watts portrays Rachel Keller, a US journalist who's asked to investigate the mysterious and brutal death of a teenage girl named Katie. Armed with nothing more than an apparently cursed video tape as evidence to aid her investigation, Rachel watches said tape in search of answers. Unfortunately, anyone who watches its footage is killed by a terrifying supernatural force seven days after viewing it. Cue a race against time to stave off whatever malevolent being is coming for Rachel.

A certifiable hit thanks to a viral marketing campaign not dissimilar to the one that turned 1999's The Blair Witch Project into a box office success, The Ring is still a spooky watch that's worth your time over two decades on from its release.

The Idea of You

Release date: May 2
RT score: 90% (critics); TBC (audience)

Based on Robinne Lee's novel of the same name that's partly autobiographical (and also apparently inspired by fanfiction about popstar Harry Styles), The Idea of You is a romantic comedy that's actually been well received by critics ahead of its Prime Video release. Considering most rom-coms, particularly in the streaming era, are looked down upon, it seems The Idea of You has plenty about it to make you swoon.

Anne Hathaway stars as Solène Marchand, a 40-year-old divorcee who takes her teenage daughter to see the universally popular boyband August Moon at Coachella. Little does Solène know, though, that a chance encounter with one of the group's members Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine) will lead to a romance unlike any other she's experienced.

American Fiction

Release date: May 14
RT score: 93% (critics); 96% (audience)

An outlandish satire that made a late run for award-based recognition at the 2024 Oscars, Cord Jefferson's American Fiction is a laugh-out-loud comedy that pokes plenty of fun at how Black literature is viewed by white people.

Jeffrey Wright (The Batman, What If...?) leads an all-star cast as Thelonious 'Monk' Ellison, an intelligent, upper-class novelist who, on a frustrated whim, pens an incredibly sarcastic book at Black stereotypes that becomes an overnight hit when his publishers awkwardly mistake it for a serious piece of penmanship. Sterling K. Brown, Adam Brody, Tracee Ellis Jones, Issa Rae, John Ortiz, and Keith David are among its heavy hitting supporting cast.

A smart, hilarious, and genuinely heart-warming exploration of overnight stardom, rich societal themes, and Black art, American Fiction is an expertly crafted flick that you can expect to see on our best Prime Video movies list very soon.

Release date: May 16
RT score: 95% (critics); 89% (audience)

The Creed series is more than just a revival and/or evolution of Sylvester Stallone's beloved Rocky franchise. With three Creed films out now – read our review of Creed III, which landed in theaters last March, while you’re here – it's a movie series in its own right. And, as sports dramas go, each Michael B Jordan-led flick is better than the last, so they're worthy entries on our new Max movies list.

The first of that trio – 2015’s Creed, which sees Jordan star as the son of Adonis Creed as he follows in his father’s footsteps to become world boxing champion (with the aid of Stallone’s Rocky Balboa) – is now available on Prime Video. Be sure to find out how to watch the Rocky movies in order, too, to see where each Creed movie sits on the Rocky timeline.
