President Obama Just Joined Facebook

Facebook now averages 1 billion active users per day, and today it got one more very important user. Barack Obama, dad, husband, and 44th president of the United States, has just joined. It’s not a campaign page, or the staff-run White House page, it’s a place where Barack can just be himself and talk directly to the people, like an average guy trying to get a Home Depot discount.

Obama’s first post includes a video of himself taking a stroll in his “backyard,” aka, a sprawling, perfectly manicured, obsessively green, White House lawn. In the video he talks about squirrels, a fox named Lincoln, and carbon emissions.

This isn’t Obama’s first go-around at the social media rodeo: he joined Twitter back in May. So far, Obama’s profile picture is the same on both platforms, but his header image on Facebook is a photo of him, wearing sunglasses and leaning over the bow of a ship, looking pensive and secure. Nice choice, Barack!

Editor’s note: The Obama administration has not indicated whether this new POTUS Facebook page will transfer over to the country’s succeeding commander-in-chief. Obama’s @POTUS Twitter handle, however, apparently will.
