Prescription medications unavailable following ransomware attack on Ascension Via Christi

MANHATTAN (KSNT) — The Ascension network gave an update following a cyber attack that caused disruptions in their online systems nationwide.

Ascension announced in a press release on Monday, May 13 that its systems were hit by a ransomware attack last week. While progress is being made on the situation, it is taking time to restore systems and services.

One of the Ascension family’s hospitals in Kansas, Via Christi in Manhattan, remains open and operational despite the ransomware attack.

“Despite the challenges posed by the recent ransomware incident, patient safety continues to be our utmost priority. Our dedicated doctors, nurses, and care teams are demonstrating incredible thoughtfulness and resilience as we use manual and paper based systems during the ongoing disruption to normal systems.”

Patients will not be able to refill prescriptions as this time at Ascension Rx retail pharmacies. If a prescription was filled before May 8, 2024, and is waiting to be picked up, this will be available for the patient. If you need to refill a prescription, you will need to contact your prescriber and get a new prescription sent to a pharmacy outside of Ascension Rx.

Ascension Via Christi’s doctor’s offices and care sites continue to operate on normal hours with all scheduled appointments on schedule. However, patients may encounter longer wait times and delays under the circumstances. Patients are encouraged to bring notes on symptoms along with a list of current medications, including prescription numbers or bottles.

Additionally, Ascension Via Christi’s emergency rooms remain open along with Via Christi Immediate Care on Murdock. Patients will still be able to get imaging, testing and treatment done at this time.
