Tents, campers, sleeping bags, coolers-camping requires plenty of gear, but the centerpiece of any campout is the fire pit. And while an old-fashioned campfire can always heat things up, building a fire is one of the biggest chores when setting up any campsite, not to mention the smoke that gets in your eyes if the wind changes.

BioLite, a startup that made its name with battery-powered camp lanterns and stoves, is taking this tiresome chore fully into the 21st century with its new FirePit. Its idea so simple, it's almost quaint-create a fire pit that won't give off smoke.

It turns out this simple idea requires lots of complex engineering. BioLite created the FirePit's integrated fan to inject air across the flames so that the fire also burns particulates, eliminating unwanted smoke. BioLite says that the FirePit can go from "spark to smokeless" in less than 30 seconds.

The FirePit is about more than just killing the smoke. The see-through mesh lets anyone sitting around your camp enjoy a good view of the fire, and the internal grating is adjustable so you can put in some charcoal and start grilling in seconds.

Truly, though, it's the integrated fan that steals the show. BioLite says its battery pack and fan can give you a day's worth of clean burning. But if you need considerably less fire-burning time, the battery pack can double a huge battery pack, powering external lights or charging your phone. You can also control the fire with the BioLite app via Bluetooth. When you increase the internal fans speed, the FirePit creates a bigger stronger fire, and vice versa if you're going for something a little more chill.

The BioLite FirePit will start at $170 on Kickstarter, marked down from its $200 retail price. Early-bird backers will also get a solar power charger that works with the FirePit, so you can charge your grill when not in use. It's worth noting that Kickstarter campaigns are never 100 percent guaranteed. But considering BioLite already has a strong lineup of solid outdoor gear, this one is a pretty safe bet.
