Over 200,000 electric ovens recalled due to fire and burn hazards

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Over 200,000 electric stoves were recalled Thursday due to fire and burn hazards, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced.

The popular Frigidaire and Kenmore Smooth-top Freestanding Electric Range ovens, which were previously recalled in August 2009, have been recalled once again.

CPSC said the ovens, made by Electrolux Home Products Inc., can turn on spontaneously without being switched on, can fail to turn off, and can heat to different temperatures than the ones selected, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

The recall affects the following models:

The ovens were sold at Sears and independent appliance stores nationwide between June 2001 and August 2009 and were priced between $1,000 and $2,500.

Since the original recall in 2009, Electrolux has received at least 212 reports of the ranges being erratic, including 14 reports of fires and eight reports of burns and smoke inhalation, CPSC said.
