OTA, FBI warn PIKEPASS customers of text message scam

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority and FBI have issued a warning to PIKEPASS customers after several other state toll agencies say they have been impacted by a text message-based scam, also known as smishing.

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has reportedly received over 2,000 complaints about road toll collection smishing texts since early March.

The texts claim that the recipient has an outstanding balance, and provides the recipient with a payment portal link impersonating the state’s toll service name.

If you receive one of these text messages, do not click on the link. Instead, the FBI advises that you:

  1. File a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov, be sure to include:

    1. The phone number from where the text originated.

    2. The website listed within the text.

  2. Check your account using the toll service’s legitimate website.

  3. Contact the toll service’s customer service phone number.

  4. Delete any smishing texts received.

  5. If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.

PIKEPASS customers can check their accounts using approved safe methods such as www.pikepass.com or www.platepay.com.
