Niche Framebuilders Share Their Most Overrated Bike Industry Trends

The Portland Made Show is an eclectic place full of all flavors of colorfully creative and unconventional bikes made by interesting and niche builders.

How niche you ask? Well, the PathLessPedaled went ahead and asked a lot of them what the most overrated industry trends are and their answers take aim at more than just a few common standards. Have a look below.

When you get a festival of bike hipsters together it shouldn't be a surprise that they take aim at things like carbon bikes and wireless electronic shifting, but these folks went beyond that even.

A few of the most outlandish - and just plain confusing - takes were that dropper posts, tubeless tires, and headsets (??) are overrated. Now, I get the contrarian frustration about the industry moving away from cable actuated shifting, but going after headsets seems like a stretch, to say the least.

Initially, it was fair to assume it was exclusively gravel and road frame builders that were firing off these gripes. But, upon watching the full video, there are an alarming amount of mountain bike frame builders there who seem to reject the modernity of mountain bikes in favor of whatever they have going on.

Now, yes there are a lot of fad trends in the industry, but anyone who rides mountain bikes can attest that things like dropper posts and outboard bearing bottom brackets are quite essential.

There isn't time to scratch my head over every hot take here, but watch the full video down and see how many times you catch yourself double-taking.
