Having successfully created episodic adventures based on Walkers, Fables, and Starks, Telltale Games is turning its attention to Creepers.

On Thursday, the game maker announced Minecraft: Story Mode, a narrative-driven game set in the Minecraft universe. It’s due out in 2015 for pretty much every gaming device around.

It’s a curious move, to say the least, but Minecraft: Story Mode is meant as a standalone product that won’t impact the core game.

“We’re not intending on creating an ‘official’ story for [Minecraft protagonist] Steve, or explaining the world of Minecraft in detail,” Minecraft developer Mojang said in a press release.

Instead, the game will feature new characters and a story crafted by Mojang, Telltale, and, somewhat fittingly, the Minecraft community. Exactly how the community will contribute to the game has yet to be detailed, though.

“We’ve begun to realize that there’s a massive demand for fiction set in the Minecraft universe. People love engaging the world, whether they’re building, adventuring, or role-playing an awesome Creeper slayer,” Mojang said in an interactive game announcing the news. “The tricky bit is working out how to explore a story without diluting Minecraft itself.”

The news is the capper in what has been a very busy year for Minecraft. In September, Microsoft purchased Mojang for $2.5 billion. Co-founder (and Minecraft creator) Markus “Notch” Persson announced his departure from the company.

For Telltale, it’s the latest in a series of high-profile episodic games. After the success of The Walking Dead two years ago, the company launched similar games based on Borderlands, the Fables comics, and most recently, A Game of Thrones.
