New Crossword App Impresses Even Our Crossword Puzzle Guru
Crosswords are not just for brainiacs; in fact, they can train your brain. Case in point: The new Daily Celebrity Crossword app. It has a wide range of puzzles on a variety of pop culture themes, like movies, music, television, and sports. I solve crosswords every day: I also write “Wordplay,” the daily crossword blog of The New York Times. And I’m still impressed by this approachable app. It’s a nice mental workout you can do on the train to work.
Created by a relatively new games company called PuzzleSocial, the Daily Celebrity Crossword is exactly that: a free, daily crossword puzzle that is crammed with celebrity clues and answers.
That will make it easy to complete if you’re hooked into pop culture. Each day has a different theme. Are you a television-swilling couch potato? Try the TV Tuesday puzzle. You’re more into music, you say? Try the Top 40 Thursday.
I played a week’s worth of puzzles, and it’s clear that a lot of work went into making these puzzles fun and the gameplay smooth. Not all crossword apps can make that claim, but co-editors Trip Payne and Amy Reynaldo are veterans of the puzzle world, and PuzzleSocial CEO Jeb Balise has made sure that the app’s design is fun and satisfying.

The Daily Celebrity Crossword is available for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, and will reportedly be available on the Windows platform sometime this year.
