Municipalities are 'duty-bound' to provide updated, functional websites; here's why

Many of our municipal government websites are outdated and lacking in functionality. It might be argued that these municipalities simply do not have the funds to prioritize revamping their websites, but many of them are paying web providers for these outdated and non-user-friendly sites. These municipalities have received from their providers websites that are not in compliance with Google Web Design Guidelines. These guidelines ensure, among other things, that websites are easy to navigate on all devices and comprised of up-to-date information. What is alarming, however, is that many of these websites are not compliant with federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) digital guidelines, putting them at risk for fines. The first violation of ADA guidelines carries with it a $75k fine; each additional violation is $150k. What’s worse is that attorneys are increasingly targeting businesses and municipalities for ADA-related litigation in addition to potential government fines.Regardless of who provides web design and maintenance services for our municipalities, the taxpayer deserves not only a well-organized, user-friendly, easily accessible website, but also one that does not pose a liability risk.Few municipalities could bear the cost of an ADA-related fine or lawsuit. Our government leaders are duty-bound to look at this long-ignored issue and implement solutions accordingly.
