The New Mercedes-AMG GT63 Is Faster Than Your Hypercar

The new Mercedes-AMG GT’s hybrid powertrain is more about fun than efficiency.

The German marque’s performance sub-brand pulled the curtain back on the range-topping GT63 S E Performance over the weekend in Shanghai. The plug-in hybrid packs significantly more power its ICE equivalent, and even now bests the One hypercar in one key area.

The big story here, of course, is the new powertrain which is the same one previously seen in the SL63 S E Performance convertible. The standard GT63 was already a powerful car, with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that produces 577 hp and 590 ft lb sitting in the engine bay. Here the V-8, which now produces 603 hp, is paired with a rear-mounted permanently excited synchronous motor that produces 201 hp and gets its juice from a 400-volt high-performance battery. Combined output comes out to 805 horses and 1,047 ft lbs of twist which is split between all four wheels via a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Thanks to all that oomph, the GT63 S E Performance can sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds. That’s 0.4 seconds faster than the standard GT63 and, even more impressively, quicker than the $2.7 million AMG One hypercar, making it the fastest acceleration Mercedes production car yet. Top speed, meanwhile, comes out to a very impressive 199 mph, which his three mph faster than the standard GT63.

The latest GT coupé comes with eight different driving modes—Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport+, Race, and Individual—which are all specifically tailored to the vehicle. Despite the presence of an all-electric mode, the automaker makes no mention of the vehicle’s electric-only range. Other features include rear-axle steering, AMG’s versatile Active Ride Control suspension, and carbon-ceramic brakes.

Both GT63s look nearly identical to each other, though the hybrid does feature a charging port located in the rear, trapezoidal tailpipes, and special “E Performance” badging. The car also rides on 20-inch, 10-spoke Tantalum Grey wheels. Inside, everything is the same as in the ICE model. Performance bucket seats are available as an add-on and there will be room to personalize the cabin through Mercedes’s Manufaktur Signature program.

The GT63 S E Performance is expected to make it onto dealer lots later this year as part of AMG’s 2025 model lineup. No price has been announced yet but expect it to cost a fair bit more than the standard GT63 which starts at $177,050.
