  • Mark Zuckerberg revealed a Facebook logo and motto after taking off his hoodie in a 2010 interview.

  • The clip resurfaced in a new documentary called "Zuckerberg: Kind Of The Metaverse."

  • Zuckerberg said the design included Facebook's then-motto: "Making the world more open and connected."

Mark Zuckerberg was not always as confident in interviews as he now seems to be.

The Meta chief appears to be sweaty and nervous in a clip from 2010 that's included in a new documentary called "Zuckerberg: King Of The Metaverse."

The clip, taken from his appearance at the AllThingsD conference in 2010, shows Zuckerberg being asked by moderator Kara Swisher if he wanted to take his hoodie off. He was being asked about privacy issues at the time.

After removing the garment, a logo — which Swisher said had a "weird symbol in the middle" — and wording can be seen printed on the inside.

Zuckerberg, who is famous for his casual attire, said it was Facebook's mission statement and told Swisher it read "Making the world more open and connected." She responded: "Oh my god, it's like a secret cult."

Privacy and data ethics scholar Michael Zimmer of Marquette University, who is interviewed for the documentary, stored the video on the digital archive he created that's called the Zuckerberg Files.

"You can tell he was uncomfortable," Zimmer said. "He took off his sweatshirt and inside his sweatshirt is this kinda weird company logo."

Zimmer said that the interviews contained in the archive show how Zuckerberg has evolved since he cofounded Facebook in 2004.

"One of the moments when that happened was an interview he gave, where there were really hot lights, there were some controversies going on and some really hard questions — he was sweating on stage.

"From that point on, they brought in the corporate communication heavyweights and gave him some speech training. That's when we start seeing the jokes about Zuckerberg as a robot, and that there's kind of this coldness to how he engages," Zimmer added.

Former Facebook designer Ben Barry created the logo in 2009, he told TechCrunch in 2012.

"The story behind the hoodie is, in November of 2009 Mark came to me, showed up at my desk and said 'hey I wanna make sweatpants' and I was a little confused at first," Barry said.

"He had in his mind that it would be a jacket as well. We talked about what he wanted to accomplish and I think thanking our employees rather than giving them something in 2010 is going to set the tone for the next year and all the hard work they're yet to accomplish was better. Mark agreed, and so that was the idea to create something to commemorate all the hard work were going to accomplish."

Barry added that they didn't want to turn staff into "walking billboards" and have the logo emblazoned on the outside. After sketching it out, they decided to incorporate three things they were focused on at the time: a graph, streams and the platform along with Facebook's mission statement.

"As far as the concept and meaning, that was pretty much it, it's not quite as exciting as some will have you believe," he said.

Representatives for Zuckerberg didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

"Zuckerberg: King Of The Metaverse" airs on Sky Documentaries in the UK on Thursday and is available on NOW. A US broadcaster is yet to be confirmed.
