The next big screen Star Wars film is coming from the small screen. Jon Favreau will direct The Mandalorian & Grogu, which goes into production later this year, produced by Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Kathleen Kennedy.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Kennedy added that “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

Production on the film which, yes, is called The Mandalorian & Grogu, begins later this year, which one can only assume means there won’t be a fourth season of The Mandalorian anytime soon. It also means that this film, not the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Rey film, is likely to be the first new Star Wars film released since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. An official release date has not yet been confirmed but May 22, 2026 is the first one on the schedule. (Though, there’s also one on December 18, 2026 so maybe we get two in one year)

And while The Mandalorian & Grogu might spell trouble for more Mandalorian on Disney+, there is some good news for the streamer. Buried in the news of this movie is the news that Dave Filoni is currently developing Ahsoka season 2.
