Lotus Evija X Goes Third-Fastest at NürburgringLotus
  • The Lotus Evija X just set the third-fastest recorded time ever around the Nürburgring's 12.9-mile Nordschleife circuit.

  • Dirk Müller piloted the Evija around the Green Hell, completing the flying lap in 6:24.047.

  • The Evija X now sits third all-time around the circuit, beaten only by the Volkswagen ID.R and Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, which holds the record in a blistering 5:19.546.

The Lotus Evija X just ran the third-fastest recorded time at the Nürburgring's 12.9-mile Nordschleife circuit. Lap records at the Nürburgring can be a bit like statistics thrown out by ESPN pundits, which is to say, hyperspecific. Since the Evija X is classified as a prototype, Maro Engel gets to keep the production-car record set with a 6:35.183 set in a Mercedes-AMG One.

Instead, the Evija X sits at the lunch table with other incredibly fast prototypes. Dirk Müller piloted the Lotus to its new benchmark time, lapping the Nordschleife in 6:24.047. The blisteringly quick time means that only the electric Volkswagen ID.R Pikes Peak racer and the Le Mans–winning Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo have set faster times. The ID.R sits second on the leaderboard with a time of 6:05.336, while the 5:19.546 from the Porsche appears to defy the laws of physics.

Modifications over the already bonkers 1972-hp Evija include racing slicks, upgraded brakes, unique dampers, and, if the rear wing the size of a continent didn't clue you in, massive aero upgrades.

The lap time leaves us with some important questions. Will Lotus send a production-spec Evija after the Rimac Nevera's EV production car record of 7:05.298? It certainly seems like the Lotus could take that title. Perhaps more importantly, will Lotus create a run of Evija X cars to be sold to customers? We certainly hope so.
