Local internet provider receives funding to increase broadband access for 1,400

Upward Broadband, a local and family-owned high speed internet provider, announced on Tuesday that it had been awarded a $1.4 million in grant funding that will be used to to increase high-speed broadband access to approximately 1,400 locations around the areas of Lebanon and Dauphin Counties.

The grant funding comes from the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority's Capital Funds Project.

“Upward Broadband was one of only 12 applicants awarded CPF monies, and is included among national internet providers like Comcast, Frontier, Verizon and Windstream,” said Tim Beiler, owner and CEO of Upward Broadband in a news release. “We are honored to have received this award, and are grateful for the opportunity to expand access to high-speed internet in areas that desperately need it.”

The funds will allow the company to construct a new tower and add equipment to five existing towers over the next two and half years, serving parts of Annville, Grantville, Hershey, Jonestown, Lebanon, Myerstown, Palmyra, Richmond, Womelsdorf and surrounding areas.

Next generation fixed wireless access will be deployed on these towers, allowing Upward Broadband to better reach homes blocked by obstructions. Technology on their current towers require a line of sight in order to offer service.
