LG Shows Gigantic G Pro 2 Smartphone

LG didn’t throw us any big curves at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona. There’s no bendy phone like the model shown off at CES in January. Instead, the company focused an event here on two new handsets unveiled in the past week: the G Pro 2 and G2 Mini.

The Pro is for the high-end market. It’s a massive “phablet” (half phone, half tablet) with an extremely large 5.9-inch display. The Mini is just that, with a 4.7-inch screen and relatively middling hardware specs.

Both models share a design language and feel like premium devices. They have similar rounded fronts, and the majority of the buttons are on the backs of the phones, including power and two volume rockers under the rear-facing camera.

In spite of its massive size (even larger than Samsung’s newest and biggest Galaxy Note), the Pro doesn’t feel overwhelming. It’s pretty slim and actually fits in my hand.

This is possible because Pro doesn’t devote space to much else than its screen. LG claims the front is 77 percent screen, in fact. That probably doesn’t sound like a lot, but take a close look at your own phone. Odds are a big chunk of what you’re holding right now is bezel and other non-screen things.

The rest of the phone is no slouch, either. But, really, this is a phone for people with large (if not necessarily deep) pockets.
