Joplin HAM radio club donates setup to Camp Childress

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. — A donation helps connect kids with people from around the world.

The Joplin Amateur Radio Club officially announced the donation of a radio tower and amateur radio setup for Camp Childress Friday. The club was able to make the donation through a grant from the American Radio Relay League combined with funds from the club.

The goal is to help grow the amateur radio club and make the world accessible to anyone using the camp.

“Actually, the first contact we made on this antenna was Portugal in Europe. It was the very first contact we made. Today, we were talking to a gentleman in Florida, we also talked to a gentleman up in Montana,” said Rex Chambers, Joplin Amateur Radio Club President.

“It does still have a lot of use by the scouts, but, yeah, we’ve got a lot of diverse groups, we’ve got church groups, we’ve got athletic groups, we’ve got groups with disabilities that come out and use our pool,” said Eric DeGruson, Property Committee Chairman.

Any group interested in using the camp facilities, including the amateur radio station, can find information here.
