John Legend’s New Music Video Teaches You How to Play the Piano Part

My colleague Rob Walker has argued that we’re in a new golden age for music videos, with artists taking advantage of the “digital magic” of the Internet and technology to push the form.

The musician and good-looking man John Legend is out with a new music video for his song “All of Me,” and this one, too, is quite innovative: The video is interactive, with Legend teaching you how to play the piano part of his new song by clicking on piano keys in time with the music.

If you play the song correctly, the video goes on; if not, you have to start over. It’s sort of like Guitar Hero, except for a performer’s music video. You can watch (and play) by clicking Legend’s handsome face below.

The video uses a new video-making platform from Adventr.tv, which lets anyone create choose-your-own-adventure videos, where events and narratives branch off from one another based on the viewer’s choices. (If you’re not into the interactive thing, Legend has a more traditional music video on YouTube, where you can lean back and just watch, no music-learning required.)

You can read more about this golden age of music videos here, and you might also be interested in how this choose-your-own-adventure tech is coming to the big screen, which you can read about here.
