SAN FRANCISCO — Amid a slew of new updates to its mobile operating system, Apple announced that it will soon endow Siri with a fun new feature: the ability to tell you what song is playing as you’re listening to it.

Powered by a popular app called Shazam, the feature, due in the fall, will quickly call up the artist and title of a song on your screen, as well as an option to purchase it in iTunes.

Ostensibly this means that if you hear a song you like, you can ask Siri what it is and become its proud owner within a minute or two.

Apple also announced that you will be able to launch the voice assistant by simply saying, “Hey, Siri,” rather than just holding the home button down.
