Internet is slow in the Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort areas. The reason is a mystery

Internet is slow in the Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort areas Thursday afternoon, for reasons unknown.

The Hargray customer service line said that they are experiencing widespread issues in multiple markets in an automated voice recording. It said they are working with network operations and engineering teams to resolve the issues.

Complete outages stayed in the tens in the areas, according to data from Downdetector.com, and compared to hundreds out outages earlier this year when a severed fiber cable brought widespread outages.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and 911 services haven’t been impacted, according to spokesperson Angela Viens. She said a cause of Thursday’s slow service, if there is one, hasn’t been identified. For the 55th year, Hargray is the official communication provider for the RBC Heritage. Last year, there weren’t widespread internet issues during the tournament, and a map of outages show issues in areas where the tournament isn’t.

“Working from home and internet keeps getting disconnected,” wrote one comment on a Hilton Head and Bluffton Facebook page called Bluffton/Hilton Head Ask and Answer. “Going to be a long day!!”

Hargray spokesperson Karen Cline didn’t immediately respond to a call and email Thursday morning.
