Impossibly Rare Boba Fett Action Figure Can Be Yours for a Mere $150,000

Got a couple hundred grand burning a hole in your pocket? Then this is the collectible Star Wars action figure you’re looking for.

Aptly named eBay seller RareStarWarsToys is auctioning what it calls the “Holy Grail” of action figures: a legendary, one-of-a-kind, rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype. The starting price? $150,000. That might sound crazy, but this particular Boba Fett might actually be worth it.

Kenner’s plans for the rocket-firing Boba Fett, which first appeared as a mail-in offer in 1979, were dashed when the included red rocket was deemed a choking hazard. The toy never made it to production — a bummer for kids hoping to play with the awesome bounty hunter, but a boon for collectors, as prototypes had still been produced. Roughly two dozen bluish, unpainted Boba Fetts are thought to be in existence, and they’re worth serious money: One sold at auction for a hefty $22,500 a few years ago.

But this particular Fett is even rarer. This exact toy first appeared at the Kenner booth during the 1979 New York Toy Fair, and it’s thought to be the only one in existence that’s carded, meaning it includes packaging (in this case, packaging specifically made for the Toy Fair).

It’s certainly got plenty of cred. The rare RocketFett was recently featured on an episode of the History Channel show Pawn Stars; show host Rick Harrison actually offered $100,000 for it but was turned down. The toy has been in the seller’s possession for many years and includes multiple certificates of authenticity. According to the Star Wars Collectors Archive, it’s “one of the most significant Star Wars prototypes ever to surface.”

So will it indeed go down as the priciest Star Wars toy of all time? We’ll find out how big a bounty this particular Boba Fett scores when the auction ends on Jan. 16.
