How to Turn Off Your iPhone’s Music Player with a Timer

Those of us who have trained ourselves to doze off to the soothing coo of an Enya playlist each night have probably also been unceremoniously awoken in the middle of the night by a stray Avicii track. This is what happens when you fall asleep with your phone’s music player on. What you might not know, however, is that you can use the iPhone’s built-in timer to silence the tunes while you snooze.

Here’s how to tell your music to shut off after a select amount of time.

1. Launch your favorite music app (this works with anything that makes sound on your phone) and start listening.

2. Go to the Clock app and select the Timer section at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

3. Set the amount of time you want your music to play, and then tap When Timer Ends.

4. Scroll down to the very bottom of the list and select Stop Playing.

Your music will immediately go quiet once the timer is up. This same trick will work on any other app you have running in the foreground on your phone.

Android doesn’t have this feature built in, but my colleague Jason, an avid evening Enya listener, recommends using the free app Sleep Timer to get the job done.
