OpenAI is facing another privacy complaint in the European Union. This one, which has been filed by privacy rights nonprofit noyb on behalf of an individual complainant, targets the inability of its AI chatbot ChatGPT to correct misinformation it generates about individuals. Rather more importantly for a resource-rich giant like OpenAI: Data protection regulators can order changes to how information is processed, so GDPR enforcement could reshape how generative AI tools are able to operate in the EU.
Apple has resumed talks with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, to build an AI-powered chatbot into the iPhone, according to a new report.
Meta's making several big moves today to promote its AI services across its platform. The company has upgraded its AI chatbot with its newest large language model, Llama 3, and it is now running it in the search bar of its four major apps (Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp) across multiple countries. This confirms and extends a test that TechCrunch reported on last week, when we spotted that the company had started testing Meta AI on Instagram's search bar.
Meta's chatbot in Instagram isn't doing anything Instagram-specific, however. It's the same bot available in all other Meta apps.
Meta has confirmed to TechCrunch that it is testing Meta AI, its large language model-powered chatbot, with WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger users in India and parts of Africa. The move signals how Meta plans to tap massive user bases across its various apps to scale its AI offerings. Meta announced plans to build and experiment with chatbots and other AI tools in February 2023.
It won't be quite the same experience, however — and of course all your chats will still go into their training data unless you opt out. Instead, you'll be dropped right into conversation with ChatGPT, which will use the same model as logged-in users. You won't be able to save or share chats, use custom instructions, or other stuff that generally has to be associated with a persistent account.
Yelp announced a new AI-powered chatbot today for consumers that helps them connect with relevant businesses for their tasks. The company joins a long list of organizations leaning into AI chatbots as an assistive medium. Yelp said that the chatbot uses OpenAI's large language models (LLMs) along with its own data to ask users queries about their problems and connect them with relevant professionals for the job.
Amazon may be scaling back its AI-powered Just Walk Out checkout-free tech in its stores in favor of smart shopping carts, but Walmart-owned Sam's Club says it's turning to AI to speed up its own exit technology. Instead of requiring store staff to check members' purchases against their receipts when leaving the store, Sam's Club customers who pay either at a register or through the Scan & Go mobile app can now walk out of the store without having their purchases double-checked. The technology, unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, has now been deployed at over 120 clubs across the U.S., which is 20% of the total number of Sam's Club locations.
Making life better for people with disabilities is a laudable goal, but accessibility tech hasn't traditionally been popular among VCs. In 2022, disability tech companies attracted around $4 billion in early-stage investments, which was a fraction of fintech’s intake, for example. One reason is that disability tech startups are often considered too niche to attain business viability -- at least on the scale that venture capital demands.

Tesla has gutted its charging team in a new round of layoffs, despite recently winning over major automakers like Ford and General Motors and making its connector the defacto standard in North America. CEO Elon Musk announced the new layoffs in an overnight email to executives, first reported by The Information, in which he said he wants leaders to be "absolutely hard core about headcount and cost reduction," as he ordered them to cut more employees who "don’t obviously pass the excellent, necessary and trustworthy test" or resign. Senior director of EV charging Rebecca Tinucci and head of new vehicles Daniel Ho are out, according to The Information.
