Here’s How People Are Reacting to Seeing the Apple Watch for the First Time

The Apple Watch has officially landed at Apple Stores across the U.S., which means for the fist time, you can walk into your local iPhone dispensary and check out the timepiece in person.

So naturally, we decided to stop by Apple’s flagship Manhattan location on 5th Ave. to see how your average Apple Store patrons were reacting to the company’s first new product in years.

Window shoppers galore

Amidst the throngs of reporters and writers on hand were a large number of curious folks staring at and taking pictures of the various watches neatly arranged in the custom table-length displays Apple designed for its timepiece.

As I walked around the store, I spotted several people lustfully eyeing the $17,000 Apple Watch Edition with its 18-karat gold body and bright red Modern Buckle band.

At one point, a little boy who couldn’t have been older than 6 turned to his father and said he wanted the super expensive watch. I didn’t stick around long enough to hear his father’s reply, but I’m willing to bet it was something along the lines of, “not on your life.”

There was a surprisingly large number of children trying on the Apple Watch as their parents looked on. I saw a mother slide up to one Apple Watch fitting station with her two sons in tow, only to let each of them check out a watch.

To check out the watch Apple asks that you schedule appointments online before heading to the store, but despite all of the hype surrounding the wrist-worn computer there were a good number of openings available for folks to walk in and meet with an Apple Store representative.

Why do I need one?

One of the biggest questions people seem to ask about the Apple Watch is, “Why do I need one?” and that’s exactly what I heard more than a a few people wonder aloud while looking at the watches in a display case.

It seemed like a majority of the people at the store fell into one of two camps: the folks that can’t wait to get their own Apple Watch, and those that don’t quite know what to make of it, and wanted to see what all of the hype is about.

It will be interesting to see how many of those unsure about the watch eventually become the ones who want one of their own, and how many will pass on Apple’s latest gadget.

The Apple Watch goes on sale April 24th and starts at $350 for the 38mm Apple Watch Sport. To schedule your appointment to try the watch, head to Apple.com.
