Google Photos Now Lets You Make Collaborative Albums

It’s the holidays, which means you’ll probably be attending a lot of parties and taking a lot of pictures. But if you’re always behind the lens, where’s the proof that you were even there?

Well, if you use Google Photos, you can show the world you were part of the action. That’s because the service now lets you create shared albums with friends and family, so the photos they took of you can live in the same space as the photos you took of them.

The feature, which is available today for both Android and iOS versions of Google Photos, lets you set your albums to Collaborative and thereby share them with whomever wants to add photos to them.

Once your friends and family join the album, you’ll get a notification, and they can start adding their shots. From then on, you’ll all receive updates when a new photo or video is added.

Google Photos is accessible via Android, iOS, and the Web. To add photos, however, you’ll need to sign up for a Google account.

Collaborative photo albums aren’t new, of course. Apple’s own Photos app already offers the same feature, though you can use it only if you have an iCloud account. And while Apple Photos is compatible with OS X, iOS, and Apple TV devices, as well as with Windows PCs, it doesn’t work with Google’s Android.

Considering that most people take pictures with their smartphones, and that most smartphones in use run on Android, that’s a significant gap that Google Photos now fills.
