Google to pay up to $6 million to News Corp for new AI content, The Information reports

(Reuters) -Alphabet-owned Google has agreed to pay News Corp, owner of the Wall Street Journal, between $5 million and $6 million annually to develop new AI-related content and products, the Information reported on Tuesday.

The new arrangement is part of a longstanding partnership between Google and News Corp, the report said, citing a News Corp employee and another person close to the deal.

"We absolutely do not have an AI content licensing deal with Google, though we do have a number of partnerships with Google across our businesses," a News Corp spokesperson told Reuters.

Google did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for a comment.

AI firms are looking to partner with news organizations to license their archived content for training their chatbots.

Similar deals include that between OpenAI and news publishers such as Financial Times and Axel Springer, whose brands include Politico.

OpenAI, maker of the viral AI chatbot ChatGPT, has netted another news licensing deal in Europe, adding London's Financial Times to a growing list of publishers it's paying for content access. The latest deal looks a touch cozier than other recent OpenAI publisher tie-ups -- such as with German giant Axel Springer or with the AP, Le Monde and Prisa Media in France and Spain, respectively -- as the pair are referring to the arrangement as a "strategic partnership and licensing agreement." On the content licensing front, the pair said the deal covers OpenAI's use of the FT's content for training AI models and, where appropriate, for displaying in generative AI responses produced by tools like ChatGPT, which looks much the same as its other publisher deals.

On the second day of the Google I/O 2024 conference, Google said on Wednesday that it is adding new security and privacy protections to Android, including on-device live threat detection to catch malicious apps, new safeguards for screen sharing, and better security against cell site simulators. The company said it is increasing the on-device capability of its Google Play Protect system to detect fraudulent apps trying to breach sensitive permissions. Google said if the system is certain about malicious behavior, it disables the app automatically.
