Gene Haas Innovation Lab opens at WSU Tech

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wednesday was a big day for students at WSU Tech as they officially opened the school’s new Gene Haas Innovation Lab.

The Innovation Lab enhances its computer numerical control (CNC) machining education and training. They say the equipment mirrors modern manufacturing facilities.

The lab provides a chance to work with equipment that is almost exactly like what they will find in modern manufacturing facilities, giving them an advantage when they move into the workforce.

“I think that machining is coming back as a trade, and being a woman of color, being a young woman myself, I hope it grows even more amongst women or people of color and that they feel more comfortable joining a workforce that might seem like it’s full of people that don’t look like them,” said Raven Austin, a machining technology student at WSU Tech.

WSU Tech says its goal is to train 250 students in CNC machining each year.
