A range of new emoji characters is set to land in 2016, bringing with it the long sought after bacon emoji.

Forming part of the Unicode 9.0 update, the list of 67 new emojis also includes the long-awaited avocado icon, along with a croissant, an egg and two clinking glasses of bubbly.

Other highlights include a boxing glove, a black heart and a male version of the popular female dancer emoji.

Unicode 9.0 is set to be released in the summer and could also be included on iOS 10, Apple’s latest smartphone software which is set to launch alongside its iPhone 7 in September.

Approved by the Unicode Consortium, which oversees the standardisation of software across the globe, the list of new emojis was published on Emojipedia.com, including illustrations of what they might look like, put together by website founder Jeremy Burge.

In 2015, emoji users were finally granted the gift of the middle finger emoji, in a variety of skin tones, thanks to the iOS 9.1 software update for iPhone and iPad.

Other emoji introduced in last year’s update included the popular taco and hot dog icons.
