Italian design legend Giorgetto Giugiaro says he thinks Tesla's Cybertruck is a masterpiece.

Giugiaro, who designed the cult classic DeLorean, called the Cybertruck "the Picasso of automobiles."

The Delorean designer was speaking to an Italian newspaper la Repubblica, where he gushed about the Cybertruck. Giugiaro said he expects the vehicle to be "hugely successful because people want to stand out."

Tesla's Cybertruck is notable for being the first stainless steel vehicle to be produced since Giugiaro's DeLorean. The DeLorean, which appeared in the "Back to the Future" film series, was launched in the 80s.

"It does not represent the search for harmony and perfection but for emotion and robustness," Giugiaro said of the Cybertruck.

This wouldn't be the first time Giugiaro has heaped praise on the Cybertruck. He told NPR in an interview last month that the truck would be a hit with buyers.

"Everyone wants to distinguish themselves. It's a market necessity, and the Cybertruck will surely be successful, I'm sure of it. I'm convinced it will find its admirers," Giugiaro said then.

The vote of confidence from Giugiaro would probably make Tesla — and its CEO Elon Musk — very happy. Giugiaro's DeLorean was one of the vehicles that inspired the Cybertruck's design, according to Walter Isaacson's biography of Musk.

Musk also has big plans for the Cybertruck, if his latest posts on X are any indication. On Monday, Musk said Tesla would be rolling out a "mod package" that would allow the Cybertruck to function as a boat.

"We are going to offer a mod package that enables Cybertruck to traverse at least 100m of water as a boat," Musk wrote on X. "Mostly just need to upgrade cabin door seals."

Representatives for Tesla and Giugiaro did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.
