Customize Your Android Notification Bar with These 3 Apps

Your Android experience can vary greatly from handset to handset. Makers like HTC and Samsung can skin the stock Android experience to their liking, and different phones may not even run the latest version of the OS, leading to small discrepancies in the experience. This can be especially problematic for those looking for their favorite features when they upgrade handsets.

Such was the case for one former Samsung owner who found his favorite quick toggle settings were missing from the drop-down notifications bar, accessed by swiping from the top of the device, on his new Nexus 5.

Luckily, there are a number of apps that let you customize this experience. We’ve chosen three that are particularly useful.

Settings Extended (left), Power Toggles (middle), Notification Toggle (right).

Settings Extended, Power Toggles, and Notification Toggle all do essentially the same thing but with a slightly different look and implementation. All three apps let you add your favorite, most-often-used settings in the notification bar — WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, or Silent Mode, for example — as well as app shortcuts. The settings you decide to include and their order are customizable, should your needs change. And there are a host of options to tweak how these settings appear, like what color or how transparent the icons are, whether they are tinted in an active or an inactive state, and whether they look more like buttons or just icons.

Heck, even if you’re happy with the settings in your notifications bar, you could use one of these apps to make them even more convenient and visually appealing.
