Commodore 64 Is Coming Back As A Retro Handheld Console

The Commodore 64 has been ‘re-imagined’ as a brand new vintage-style desktop, as well as a handheld console for gaming on the go.

The makers are crowd-funding ‘The 64’ on Indiegogo with a target of $150,000 (£105,000).

If the project reaches its funding goal, the new version of the classic home computer will come bundled with a joystick, a collection of retro games as well as some brand new content.

Buyers can choose between a desktop computer or a brand new handheld (Retro Games)

The desktop computer version costs $150 (£105) or $175 (£123) with the joystick bundled in, while the handheld console costs $170 (£120).

There’s no news on which games will be included just yet, but the makers plan to start announcing these in the coming weeks.

While the original computer was made by US company Commodore, the new version is being developed by UK-based form Retro Games.

The original Commodore launched in 1982 as an 8-bit computer and is the highest-selling single computer model of all time. The popular home computer was eventually discontinued in 1994.

If the funding goal is reached, the desktop version is due to ship in late 2016, with the handheld console following in April 2017

The 64 follows hot on the heels of the successful Indiegogo funding of the handheld ZX Spectrum.
