City of San Diego to add hundreds of electric vehicle chargers

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — More electric vehicle charging stations are coming to San Diego in the next few years, according to an announcement from the city on Monday.

The city council approved an agreement with True Upside Consulting LLC to add hundreds of EV charging stations at public facilities, including libraries and recreation centers, within the next two years.

According to the city, True Upside will pay the city for the usage of public property, which includes the installation, maintenance and operation of the chargers on city parking lots.

There are more than 400 city-owned parking lots, including nearly a hundred at community recreation centers and libraries, the city said.

The first phase of construction will take place on those parking lots, with chargers to be installed in later phases at city beaches, municipal office buildings, fire and police stations, and parks and open spaces.

As part of the agreement, existing EV charging stations at areas like Balboa Park and Mission Bay will be switched out for newer ones from Loop Global, a partner in the proposal with True Upside, the city said.

The contract is for the span of 10 years with revenue collected not to exceed $60 million, according to the city.
