CHP unveils online portal to obtain crash reports

The California Highway Patrol has announced a new online portal that allows the public to obtain copies of collision reports via computers or mobile devices.

The CHP's Online Crash Portal is meant to make it easier for those who have been involved in crashed to quickly obtain copies of their crash reports for free, the agency said in a written statement.

"The process is simple and free, and only takes a couple of minutes," according to an instructional video explaining the new portal.

Users simply go to crashes.chp.ca.gov, or scan the QR code included on the "crash card" provided by CHP officers to motorists when they are involved in collisions to register.

"Next, enter the information found on the crash card and click 'search for crash.' It's that easy," the video added.

Most reports are completed and available within eight days for involved parties, which include involved motorists, passenger, owners of damaged property and legal representatives and insurance companies.

Some reports, such as those regarding fatal collisions, may take longer to complete, officials said.
