CES Day 3 Wrap-Up: Mobiles

LAS VEGAS — Of all the mobile tech on display at CES, one of the most interesting and talked-about gadgets is Sony’s new Walkman. But this isn’t the kind of Walkman you listened to as a kid. This thing plays high-resolution digital audio with higher-than-CD quality sound.

Oh, also: The new Walkman is heavy, bulky, and costs nearly $1,200. But audiophiles with expensive taste and disposable income will almost certainly want to check out this music player, as well as the competing $400 PonoPlayer.

The most interesting smartphone of this year’s CES has to be LG’s G Flex 2. This curved smartphone features a flexible design that can go from crescent-shaped to almost flat without suffering any cracks or breaks.

Highlights include a gorgeous 5.5-inch, 1080p display and a 13-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization.

There’s also innovation in wearables, like the Alcatel OneTouch Watch. Designed with a gorgeous circular watch face, the OneTouch Watch looks similar to Motorola’s beautiful, though bulky, Moto 360 smartwatch.

Unlike the Moto 360, though, the OneTouch watch runs on Alcatel’s own operating system, and it can work with both Android phones and Apple’s iPhone. Android Wear devices like the Moto 360 will work only with Android smartphones.

And let’s not forget about the laptop. Though sales of notebooks have fallen in recent years, a laptop computer is still the tech workhorse for a lot of people.

This year’s most impressive laptop is Lenovo’s new LaVie Z. Built in conjunction with tech giant NEC, the Lenovo LaVie Z is the lightest 13-inch laptop in the world.

In fact, the laptop is so light it makes Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air feel like you’re holding a bag of bricks.

The LaVie Z isn’t just some neutered laptop designed to be lightweight, though. It’s packing a powerful Intel Core processor and 4 GB of RAM, so it can handle nearly all of your most demanding tasks.
