Catch Pokémon, Save Your Data with T-Mobile's Latest Promotion

Sure, you gotta catch 'em all — that's the first law of Pokémon — but you also don't want to drain the monthly data allotment on your cell phone plan during your marathon Pokémon Go sessions. T-Mobile is offering customers some relief — and also hoping to lure Pokémon Go addicts into switching the Uncarrier — by letting its subscribers play the highly popular game without it impacting their monthly data for the next year.

The promotion is part of T-Mobile Tuesdays, the carrier's weekly program of giveaways and freebies to subscribers. The July 19 prize will be free unlimited data when playing Pokémon Go during the next year. Freebies for all T-Mobile customers will also include the usual discounts on Lyft rides and a free Frosty at Wendy's.

It's not out of character for T-Mobile to offer discounts on data. The carrier's Music Freedom promotion lets subscribers stream music from more than 40 services without that eating into their data. And T-Mobile customers with data plans of 3GB or more can stream video from 80 services without it impacting their monthly allotment (though the video streams at a lower quality).

In other Pokémon Go-powered promos, T-Mobile says it will give away $100 in PokéCoins to 250 people as part of T-Mobile Tuesdays. And five customers will win Pokémon Go hunting trips to anywhere in the U.S. on T-Mobile's dime. (Remember: There are some places you shouldn't hunt for Pokémon.)

It's a clever move for T-Mobile to get in on the Pokémon Go craze and something that Pokémon Go addicts already subscribing to T-Mobile are sure to appreciate. It seems less likely that T-Mobile's offer will cause a stampede of Pokémon Go players to switch their carriers, especially for a game whose popularity could fade before the fall.

Still, T-Mobile isn't the only wireless carrier looking to capture customers like Ash catches Pokémon. Sprint announced that it would place Pokémon Go lures both at its stores and at the retail outlets for its Boost Mobile prepaid subsidiary. The carrier is also offering free charging stations at Sprint and Boost stores for Pokémon Go players.

There's no word from AT&T on whether Pikachu can be expected to make a cameo next to Lily, the perky AT&T sales clerk, in that carrier's next TV ad.
