The days of scribbling in a paper notebook are over. These days it’s easier than ever to keep all your precious notes on your tablet or even on your smartphone. But using your device’s default notepad app can be an exercise in frustration, so give these note-taking apps a try and transform your gadget into a valuable study guide.

Evernote

One of the most popular productivity apps of all time, Evernote can be the perfect classroom companion. You can type notes with an onscreen keyboard, use a stylus to create handwritten notes, or even photograph textbook pages and paper handouts to turn them into searchable digital documents. Evernote will sync your notes across all your devices, so you can take notes on a tablet and then browse them later on your laptop or smartphone.

Google Keep

Google Keep is great for fast-paced note takers who want to keep a wealth of information in a compact space. You can enter your notes the old-fashioned way or let the app’s speech-to-text feature transcribe your own dictation or your professor’s lecture. With the superslick pin board-style menus you can quickly switch between documents or discarded notes you no longer need.

Papyrus

If typing notes isn’t your style, Papyrus will give you the feeling of old fashioned pen-and-paper scribbling without the paper. When you use either a stylus or your finger, Papyrus lets you jot down notes on your tablet or smartphone screen with several different styles of virtual paper, a ton of composition options, and a powerful suite of features. You can resize and change the color of specific words to add emphasis, cut or copy items across multiple pages, and export your work in a ton of different formats.

OneNote

For the most powerful note taking software available, Microsoft’s OneNote is a top contender. It’s the mobile version of Microsoft’s popular productivity application, and it has all the bells and whistles of its bigger brother, including full Microsoft Office integration, image and video support, and keyword search across all your notes. If you want to go all-out, you can even sync your notes to the cloud using Microsoft’s OneDrive storage.

With these apps, it has never been easier to keep your classroom notes organized, thorough, and safe from random soda spills, so put technology to work for you and knock your courses out of the park.
