These Awesome Off-Road Rigs Are Rescuing People in Houston
Texans buy more trucks than any other state in the country, and many of them are putting them to use this week by transporting people to safety who have been stranded by Hurricane Harvey.
Heather Royston of Houston has transformed her rock crawling FJ40 Land Cruiser into a rescue vehicle, by carrying as many people as she can in her truck and pulling others behind in rafts and paddleboards. The truck's oversized tires and high ground clearance keep her above the treacherous waters and allow her to navigate obstacles in the road that might stop most emergency vehicles. Many other off-road vehicles are equipped with snorkel air intakes that make them even more suited for these types of rescues.
There are countless other good samaritans putting their lives and vehicles at risk to help others. Since Harvey dumped an unprecedented amount of rain on the sprawling Texas city, we've seen images of citizen rescue boats and helicopters navigating the disaster to rescue people and residents escaping the floodwaters in kayaks and impromptu watercraft. It's great to see them putting their vehicles, and their ingenuity, to good use.
