Ascension says sites across Illinois remain operational despite ongoing cyberattack

CHICAGO — Ascension Health says all of its sites across Illinois remain open and operational despite an ongoing cyberattack — that includes Saint Joseph’s in Lakeview and 13 other hospitals, as well as 150 offices and clinics.

Ascension reported to WGN its electronic medical records and phone systems were down nationwide, and elective procedures have been paused amid an ongoing cybersecurity incident that was first detected on May 8.

The company said it’s working with cybersecurity experts to get things back to normal, but did not provide a timeline.

Suspected cybersecurity attack at Ascension Health impacting Chicago hospitals

The following statement was released Monday:

Ascension previously reported that it experienced a ransomware attack that has caused disruptions to patient care in its network. Our priority remains on providing safe patient care. Ascension, with the support of leading cybersecurity experts, worked around the clock over the weekend to respond to the ransomware incident affecting our systems. We are focused on restoring systems safely. We are making progress, however, it will take time to return to normal operations. As systems and services come back online, we will share those updates so that our patients and communities can plan accordingly. We have established a dedicated website to share any updates we have across our system.
