Apple’s iMac with 5K Retina Display May Just Blow Away Your HDTV

It looks like all of the rumors were true. Apple has just revealed its new 27-inch iMac, and it has one of the best displays to ever ship with a desktop computer.

According to Apple, the Retina 5K display is the world’s highest resolution display, with a resolution of 5120 × 2880. For comparison, the average TV has a display resolution of 1920 × 1080.

The new iMac’s higher resolution screen should prove especially helpful for photo and video editors, as well as designers who need their screen images to be as crisp as possible.

Average folks, though, likely won’t need such a high-res screen, as 4K content, which the iMac can display, isn’t yet widely available.

Cramming more pixels into the iMac’s screen means the computer needs to use more power. But thanks to some power-saving technologies, Apple says its beastly all-in-one is surprisingly power efficient.

What’s inside
The iMac with Retina display gets a power quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, which can be upgraded to an even faster Intel Core i7 chip. Graphics are handed by an AMD Radeon R9 graphics chip, which Apple says offers 40 percent faster performance.

Apple says the new iMac will also come with a 1-terabyte storage drive. That’s a lot of space for all your favorite movies and photos.

Perhaps most impressive, however, is the fact that the iMac with Retina display is still just 0.2 inches thin.

Want to get the new iMac with Retina display? Well, I hope you’ve been saving your pennies, because it doesn’t come cheap. According to Apple, the new desktop will start at $2,499 for the standard configuration. If you want more space or a faster processor, you’ll have to pony up several hundred more dollars.

Mac mini
In addition to the iMac with Retina display, Apple also announced that its Mac mini is getting a performance boost. The miniature desktop, which Apple says is the world’s most power efficient, is now available with Intel’s fourth-generation Core processors, two Thunderbolt ports, and faster storage.
