Apple Outs 15-inch MacBook Pro With Force Touch, $1,999 iMac With Retina 5K

Apple has quietly refreshed its Mac lineup with a new 15-inch MacBook Pro and a cheaper version of its high-end iMac with Retina 5K display.

The company on Tuesday released a revamped version of its 15-inch MacBook Pro that features the new Force Touch trackpad, replacing the traditional clickable trackpad with a static one that uses haptic feedback to simulate a click. In addition, it unveiled a $1,999 version of its iMac with Retina 5K display and lowered the price of its current model by $200 to $2,299. All the new models are available on Apple’s website.

The Force Touch trackpad is the latest feature making its way through Apple’s MacBook line, which started with the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the new, svelte MacBook. With the 15-inch MacBook Pro getting the usual bump in specifications like processor speed and memory, the additional of Force Touch marks the most significant new feature for Apple’s latest laptop.

“The response to the new MacBook and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display has been amazing, and today we are thrilled to bring the new Force Touch trackpad, faster flash storage and longer battery life to the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement.

Apple said the new MacBook Pro features 2.5 times faster flash storage than the previous version. It also lasts longer, getting an additional hour of battery life for a total of nine hours of wireless Web browsing and up to nine hours of iTunes movie playbook. Its new Advanced Micro Devices Radeon R9 M370X graphics chip allows for 80 percent faster performance with video editing programs like Final Cut Pro X or rendering 3D images, the company said.

The new iMac with Retina 5K features the same 5,120 by 2,880 pixel resolution as before, and has a 3.3 gigahertz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with “Turbo Boost Speeds” of up to 3.7GHz. The new iMac includes 8 gigabytes of memory and 1 terabyte of storage, as well as four USB 3.0 ports and two Thunderbolt 2 ports. The higher end iMac has a 3.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 process with Turbo Boost Speeds of up to 3.9GHz, as well as a 1 TB fusion drive that combines flash memory with a traditional hard disk drive.

The iMac with Retina 5K display was the big advancement in Apple’s iMac line last year, which generally keeps the same look but includes a super high-resolution display.
