Here's the most popular emoji, according to Apple (it's totally 2017)

Well this makes perfect sense. 

According to Apple, the most popular emoji for U.S. English speakers is ... 😂 ! The emoji is officially called "Face With Tears of Joy," although it's also known as the "laugh/cry" emoji, which is clearly the appropriate response to 2017.

The next two most popular emoji (trailing well behind 😂 ) are the red heart ❤️  and "loudly crying" 😭  — it also me.

Apple revealed the news in a report about how they anonymously collect user data for insights into iPhone usage and potential problems, via The Verge. One of Apple's techniques allows them to collect data on word and emoji usage, which the tech company says can help with word suggestions for users.

Oxford Dictionaries named "Face With Tears of Joy" the actual word of the year in 2015. It was their first time selecting a "pictograph" as a "word," but in a blog post they explained that the time was right. 

So it seems that America has had some mixed feelings, perfectly expressed in pictograph form, for a while now.
